HCP of the Month April 2023 – Rebecca

Rebecca H is our HCP of the Month. Rebecca has been a CNA for over 15 years. Every supervisor she has worked with has only had nice things to say about her. Rebecca’s work had been commended by one of the facilities.

“She is always punctual and helpful in the facility, with few exceptions,” they explained. “The energy she has brought to this facility cannot be understated.”

Outside of work, Rebeca is a family-oriented person. She spends the majority of her leisure time bonding with her loved ones. Her family is everything to her, and she wouldn’t have it any other way. On the weekends, you may find her at her favorite Mexican restaurants, enjoying a hearty platter of quesadillas, tacos, or tamales with a side of horchata. No doubt, she loves Mexican food almost as much as she loves providing world-class care to patients in need.

Rebecca has been a great staff, from the first day she joined our platform. That is why we strive to offer the best matchmaking services and assistance available. Thankfully, this appreciation goes both ways.

Nurse shifts can be long, demanding and physically taxing. As you walk around fulfilling your daily tasks, you want functional and comfortable work shoes to ease some of the burden.

In fact, the shoes that nurses wear can have a huge impact on their long term foot health.

Why are nursing shoes so important?

How often should nurses replace shoes? 

You do not want to wear the same pair of shoes, every nursing shift. This will speed up the inevitable wear-and-tear, and will cost you more overall. 

Most nurses have multiple work shoes that they rotate between every other day. This lets your shoes last longer, and even lets you vary your style and appearance. 

Having a pair of shoes for every work day might be excessive and practical. In most cases, 3 work shoes will more than suffice. 

What kind of shoes am I looking for? 

Nurses want to look for comfortable shoes with form functionality. You have to make sure the supportive soles are thick enough to support your weight. Quality arch support is also key for foot and ankle stability. 

If possible, find shoes with a wipe-off surface. You are going to expose yourself to a lot of bodily fluids and miscellaneous substances that could stain your sneakers.

Key Takeaways from the 2023 State Of Nursing Survey

The 2023 State of Nursing report was published not too long ago. Surveying over 2,000 nurses, it provides a vivid snapshot of how nurses in America feel about their position and the industry at large. 

These findings speak volumes about both the consequences of the recently-ended lockdown, and what the future of nursing may look like. It is a lot of data to sift through, so we have gathered the key takeaways for your convenience. 

More and more nurses want to leave traditional roles 

Bedside nursing is steadily falling out of favor, in recent years. Although traditional nurses are essential to any healthcare facility’s success, these HCPs often found themselves at the center of the pandemic’s worst effects. With that in mind, it is no surprise that more nurses have considered transitioning to non-clinical roles.

For reference, the 2021 report had 29% of correspondents expressing interest in leaving clinical nursing. This year, that figure spiked up to 35%. Among other roles, nurses have looked towards nurse education, clinic/outpatient, home care and self-employment. Most popular answer was retirement, which is cause for some concern. Losing too many bedside nurses could have dire consequences, in the future. 

That begs the question: what would it take to retain them? According to the survey, the top three answers are as follows:

  • Improved working conditions (41%)
  • Higher pay (63%)
  • Better staffing ratios (71%)

Staffing shortages continue to be a problem

That 71% of nurses replied with “better staffing ratios” is no surprise. The results of the survey indicate that the nursing shortage continues to plague HCPs and facilities alike. A staggering 79% of correspondents believe that their units are understaffed. Nurses are commonly taking on more patients and longer hours than are reasonable. 

Per the US Bureau of Labor and Statistics, around 275,000 nurses are needed between 2020 to 2030, in order to address the nursing shortage. As of the most recent census, America is currently on pace to produce 195,400 new nurses from 2021 to 2031. This is about as fast as average for most professions, but not quite enough to fill the gap. 

For the time being, it looks like staffing shortages will continue to be an issue for years to come. The culprits are who you would expect: up to 75% of nurses attributed these problems to widespread burnout. Working conditions and pay issues were the only two responses that reached higher than 50%. 

Nurses feel underpaid 

55% of correspondents saw a pay raise in the last year or so. Despite this, as much as 75% of nurses feel like they are being underpaid. The survey found that nurses will earn $61,000 to $80,000 a year, on average. Certain departments feel stronger about this than most. In particular, a staggering 83% of emergency nurses feel like they were not properly compensated. Surgical, pediatric, acute/critical care and long term care nurses (among others) also felt significantly underpaid. 

You can see where the HCPs are coming from. Nurses already worked long and grueling hours, but the pandemic brought this to a boiling point. Even in a post-pandemic setting, nurses are still covering for inadequate staffing ratios and significant shortages that are challenging to fill, longterm. 

The path forward 

To say that nurses have “been through a lot” would be a gross understatement. In spite of everything, a whopping 60.3% of correspondents still love their jobs as nurses. There are still outstanding HCPs who want to remain in the industry, one way or the other. 

The nurses want to stay. They just want better compensation and conditions in return. Facilities and healthcare companies have a duty to care for the exceptional workers in their payroll. If we do not look out for our healthcare heroes, healthcare in the future will have a far bleaker outlook than any numbers would suggest.

We are staring at the face of a massive recession. Everyone is about to feel the monetary consequences and nurses are no exception. 

While you still have a stable salary, you want to secure your future as soon as possible. Before things get out of hand, consider making these 7 forward-thinking money moves. 

Plan for an emergency fund

Surprise expenses can be gutting. If your car breaks down, you suddenly come down with an illness or your home needs immediate renovation, that could completely derail your plans for the future.

If you have space, you want to allot some of your salary money for an emergency fund. This ensures that you will have a cushion for a rainy day.

How Hospitals Can Navigate the Nursing Supply/Demand Imbalance 

On May 11, 2023, the US will end the Federal COVID Emergency Order. This coincides with case counts trending downwards along with the lifting of more mask and vaccine mandates.

Although COVID must still be taken seriously, the world is transitioning towards a post-pandemic world. The consequences of the pandemic still loom over the healthcare industry, however.

For an example, look no further than the imbalance of nursing supply and demand. 

The nursing shortage

In 2023, the American Nurses Foundation surveyed 23,000+ nurses across the country. 52% of them expressed an intent to leave the profession. 89% of these correspondents pointed to short staffing as their main motivating factor. 

COVID-19 took a heavy toll on the nursing population. HCPs were exposed to a high-stress work environment. Long, gruelling shifts and short staffing were the norms, at the height of the pandemic. Burnout, depression and other mental health issues were already issues in nursing, but the situation worsened them. 

When supply does not meet demand

This is not the only issue, either. The qualified nurses that remain are ageing out and retiring by the droves. While there will always be new nurses and students, there will not be enough new nurses to meet the compounding demand.

While the supply of nurses stagnates, the demand is only increasing by the year. As the population ages, more people turn to registered nurses for continuing care. The same applies to people with chronic conditions, as we learn more about preventative treatment. 

According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, registered nurses will grow by 6% between 2021 and 2031, equating to roughly 195,400 jobs. 

To put the nursing shortage into perspective: some project that it would take 200,000 new nurses every year until 2030 to make up the deficit.

If nursing facilities do not adapt to the impending supply/demand imbalance, they are going to find themselves in big trouble. What hospitals need is a flexible model that helps with stemming the tide.

Nurse-to-Patient Staffing Ratio Laws and Regulations by State

Healthy nurse-to-patient staffing ratios are key for any successful hospital operation. Too many patients lead to overworked and stretched-thin nurses, while too many nurses result in redundancies and needless labor costs. This is why a number of states have their staffing ratio laws and regulations in place– to strike that balance and ensure improved patient outcomes, across the board. Today, we will go over a couple of these laws, the states that implement them, and how they achieve their goals in different ways.

How hospitals determine the workload

Hospitals have different standards for determining how many patients a nurse can take care of, at once. They judge their nurses’ skill sets, the patients’ locations in the facility, and their conditions, and assign the workload accordingly. Understaffed hospitals commonly exceed recommended ratios to compensate for a lack of manpower. This was a common sight during the pandemic when hospitals were underprepared to address the sudden spike in COVID-related hospitalizations. This approach is a short-term solution that can backfire quickly. Appropriate staffing ratios have a direct link to improved patient outcomes. Overworked nurses eventually become more prone to clinical errors, infections, and medical complications of their own. This is why a number of states have legislations in place to push hospitals toward observing recommended staffing ratios.

These laws can be broken down into three main categories: legally-mandated nurse-to-patient ratios, public reporting systems, and hospital-based staffing committees.

Legal staffing mandates

Currently, there are only two states with strictly-enforced staffing ratio policies. Staffing mandates are currently a contentious topic with no clear consensus. Of the two, California is the only state that has legally-mandated ratios for every single hospital unit. Just as an example, every pediatrics unit must observe a 1:4 RN to Patient ratio, while psychiatric departments observe a 1:6 ratio. Massachusetts only enforces a 1:1 ratio for the Intensive Care Unit.

Publicly-disclosed staffing ratios

Public reporting is a compromise for states who do not observe strict staffing ratio policies. Instead, hospitals must publicly disclose their staffing ratios so that patients can make educated decisions on where to receive their healthcare. At the time of writing, New York, Rhode Island, Illinois, Vermont, and New Jersey are the only states with public reporting laws in place. The frequency of these reports differs. Vermont hospitals only need to report their ratios once a quarter while Rhode Island facilities report themselves once a year. Illinois and New Jersey are made to report their ratios more frequently, at least once a month. Lastly, hospitals in New York must disclose their staffing situation at the state’s request.

Hospital-based staffing committees

Nurse-driven staffing communities are another avenue meant to hold hospitals accountable for their staffing situations. Hospital stakeholders convene to evaluate staffing issues and how they can be resolved. The idea is to connect the stakeholders with their staff while coming up with solutions specific to their facility’s needs and resources. There are a number of states with these kinds of staffing committees in place: Connecticut, Nevada, New York, Oregon, Illinois, Ohio, Minnesota, Texas, and Washington. To get a worker’s perspective, every state mandates that these committees must be made of at least 50% clinical nurses.

A proper plan of attack

Currently, not every state has staffing ratio laws and regulations in place. Ultimately, however, this is an issue that every area eventually needs to address. The pandemic did not introduce the nursing shortage or turnover, but it accelerated a long-running trend to dramatic levels. If hospitals are to weather the storm, then legislation must be put in place to ensure a healthy staffing ratio situation that places them in the best possible position for success. There is no one true solution to the current nurse staffing problem. What works best for your area will depend on several variables and factors.
