Further Your Education

You can currently become a Registered Nurse with your Associate’s Degree in Nursing. However, getting at least your Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing makes finding RN jobs in California far easier. As the nursing world grows more competitive, healthcare facilities are looking to staff the best personnel available. Born and raised in New York City, she decided to move to San Diego to pursue a career in Healthcare – particularly nursing.

Despite being a relatively new CNA, she has worked in the healthcare setting for 5 years in various hospital departments namely Dietary and Patient Access.

Currently she plans to further her education to become a Pediatric RN. Becoming a Nurse Practitioner is also on the cards. Outside of work, she hones her proficiency in Korean language while taking care of her physical health.

Florida district judge lifts mask mandate nationwide, amid concerns from vulnerable populations

Last Monday, US District Judge Kathyrn Kimball Mizelle effectively ended the travel mask mandate, nationwide. Although Judge Mizelle is based in California, her status as a federal judge lets her issue rulings that override national government policies. She exerted this authority to overrule the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s mask requirement for airports, taxis, trains and other transportation hubs. This was originally expected to end on Monday, but the CDC wanted to extend it to observe the prevalent BA.2 omicron variant.

The CDC is adamant that masks will still be required and has criticized Judge Mizelle’s reasoning as “poorly reasoned and wrong (…) in need of more experienced juridical review.” In response, the DOJ has sent a notice of appeal to Florida court, regarding the travel mask mandate ruling. For the time being, the initial injunction remains in place.

Response to the order has been mixed. While experience has expressed relief at the news, there are still major concerns. The biggest one is the risk this order places on immunocompromised Americans. About 3% of Americans fall into the strict definition of immunocompromised, which is having weakened immune systems. This makes them susceptible to severe COVID-19 illnesses even after vaccination.

A March 2021 study also reveals that only 56% of these people gain sufficient COVID protection after their second dose of either Pfizer and Moderna. Additionally, chronically ill and disabled individuals may not be “immunocompromised” in the strictest definition but they will still be affected more severely by COVID-19 than other populations. The concern is that removing travel mask mandates will put these populations at risk. With no community measures, their only protection in high risk areas is individual masking.

Luckily, these individuals are not without any protections going outside. According to Dr. Scott Gotlieb, the 23rd commissioner for the Food and Drug Administration, said strong masks like KN95 or N95 variants offer quality protection even when other people are not masking. “If you have a good-fitting mask, a high-quality mask on and you’re wearing it well, you’re going to afford yourself a high degree of protection,” Gottlieb explained.

Though this should provide some solace, the fact remains that the ruling has been met with mixed results. At the time of writing, the mask mandate has been lifted but the DoJ’s appeal is ongoing. The CDC still recommends masking in public transportation settings even if it is no longer mandatory.

How to Pay For Your LPN Education

The costs of any nursing program are considerable. Even if LPN programs are cheaper compared to other nursing positions, the average tuition still sits at around $10,000 to $15,000. Some schools even charge as high as $30,000. This does not even cover book prices, certification exam costs and other miscellaneous fees. No matter how you slice it, that is a lot of money to pay out of pocket. Fortunately, aspirin nursing students have a host of financial aid options available to them. If you want to become an LPN, but you cannot pay the costs just yet, consider the following programs:

FAFSA

Before you enroll into any program, you are asked to fill out the Free Application for Financial Assistance (FAFSA) form. FAFSA is the largest source of financial aid available to students. They evaluate your income, level of support and financial need in order to find out whether or not you qualify for any federal financial aid programs like loans and grants. For aspiring LPNs who need to pay for their education, this is the perfect place to start.

You can either submit the FAFSA online, through the official mobile app or fill out a paper form from your school or the FAFSA website. You also want to make sure that you have the following documents prepared, before sending your application:

  • Driver’s License Number
  • Your social security number and your parents’ (if you are dependent)
  • Alien registration number (if you are not a US citizen)
  • Taxed and untaxed income records
  • Federal tax returns for you and your spouse or parents

Loan

55% of medical students use loans to pay off their education fees. When you loan, you borrow a sum of money with the intention of repaying them in full, plus interest. Students can choose from two different types of loans: Federal and Private. Federal student loans are funded by the government. If you are an undergraduate in financial need, you may qualify for subsidized loans. These loans do not gain interest while you are in school at least half-time or during deferment periods. Unsubsidized loans still gain interest while you study, but they are available to graduates, undergraduates and professional degree seekers alike.

Meanwhile, private student loans are offered by banks, credit unions, educational institutions and other independent entities. Unlike federal loans, they are typically not subsidized and come with higher interest rates as well. Because of the potential added cost, you have to shop around with scrutiny to find the best offers. On top of the payment offers and interest rates at face value, look into hidden costs, what happens if you cannot keep up financially with later payments and how repayments are structured. You can also check if there is a chance of loan forgiveness, down the line. Finally, you should check whether the interest rates are variable (subject to change) or fixed (set in stone), so you can account for this in your financial plans.

Grants

Grants are a form of financial aid usually provided by the government, in order to assist those in financial need. Because of this, qualifying students do not need to pay back the costs at all. If FAFSA deems you as eligible for a grant, do not be afraid to take these opportunities. Currently, one of the more well-known grants is the Federal Pell Grant .This program serves undergraduate students in exceptional financial need. At the time of writing, the maximum Federal Pell Grant sits at around $6,495 for the award year of July 1, 2022, to June 30, 2023. In special circumstances, students could receive 150% of their grant within an eligible award year. Alternatively, private entities such as companies or individuals could hold grant programs as well. If you are considering such programs, take the time to review and research these offers to ensure they are legitimate.

Scholarships

Like grants, scholarships are a form of financial assistance that does not need to be repaid. Unlike grants, they are merit-based programs that are given based on academic performance, extracurricular activities like sports or music and more. While schools and universities are the most common providers, a number of entities host their own scholarship programs. This includes businesses, individuals, non-profits, and even churches. Just like with grants, you have to do exhaustive research before applying for a scholarship, to ensure that the entity is legitimate and acting in good faith.

Your school’s office of financial aid is a great place to start, since they usually have a list of available scholarships. There are also a host of scholarship databases with recommendations and details, if you want to do further reading. When you start applying, be sure to have all your documents ready when you submit your application. Requirements may vary, but most scholarships will require you to submit personal information. This could be an essay about yourself, or a statement describing how this scholarship would benefit you. Finally, always submit your application on time as scholarship programs tend to have strict deadlines.

Around One-Third of Nurses Are Expected To Quit in 2022

COVID-19 has taken its toll on the healthcare industry. At its peak, hospitals were filled to capacity and nurses were struggling with low supplies, long hours of grueling work and anxiety regarding infection. Surveys from various agencies confirm where things are trending: all this stress is resulting in burnout and turnover.

As much as 33% (around one-third) of nurses stated that it is “highly likely” that they will quit their jobs around the end of 2022. 45% of these respondents cited burnout and a high-stress environment, while 32% pointed to insufficient pay and benefits.

Abusive workplace interactions was another common sticking point. As much as 64% of correspondents reported dealing with physical or verbal abuse from patients and their families. Within these cases, frustration around COVID guidelines (51%) and perceived insufficient staff or care (48%) were the main instigating factors. On a different note, as much as 31% of nurses detailed cases of workplace discrimination or racism. A majority of this came from patient interactions, but 45% of these RNs mentioned dealing with this kind of abuse from their workplace peers. Though not necessarily “abusive,” as much as 65% of nurses felt underappreciated by their communities for their efforts in controlling COVID-19.

Not all resigning nurses were quitting healthcare completely. A considerable 41% of nurses planned to work in different healthcare facilities, while 31% of nurses were either going to leave nursing or retire outright. Surveys also found that 41% of correspondents had already found new nursing jobs by January 2021. Common motivations behind this move included better pay (57% of these nurses), desire for a new role (34%), better scheduling (32%), location (24%), advancing their careers or training (23%) and improved staffing (25%).

Regardless, it is undeniable that the nursing workforce is bleeding manpower. Facilities have been scrambling to find ways to retain high-end talent, like dramatically increasing sign-on bonuses. There has been a significant 161% increase in job contracts with sign-on bonuses. In Texas, 57% of job offers had such bonuses, compared to 15% from the year prior.

The sign on bonuses themselves have almost doubled from $5,600 to $10,500 in the same amount of time. Nationwide, the highest sign-on bonuses belong to Florida at an average of $13,000. California remains at the top of base salary, at 21% higher than the $80,000 median pay..

The US Bureau Labor of Statistics estimates that over 90,000 people have left the hospital sub sector since March 2020. Various Nurses Associations predict that there will be as much as 100,000 vacant nursing jobs next year.

Last year, they formally declared a national nurse staffing crisis and enacted policies to address the issue. Nurses’ mental health, retaining staff and the limited education of new nursing students were among the biggest issues that needed addressing.

On the bright side, more and more nurses are opting to get their vaccines. 89% of nurses have received their COVID-19 doses, compared to last year’s 73%. Considering how 32% of nurses reportedly had no intentions to receive their shots, this is a considerable improvement. Nursing facilities will now be safer and more prepared for the risk of a COVID-19 outbreak.

There are no easy fixes to this ongoing nursing shortage. Experts believe that this will persist well beyond 2022. However, hospitals can do their best to retain staff by addressing the issues outlined above. Truly competitive wage offers, more opportunities for career advancement and further training, and flexible scheduling are just a few of the ways that healthcare facilities can make their staff feel valued. Making your staff feel valued and being transparent with key concerns will go a long way in making things better for everyone.

The nursing world has a mental health problem. Cases of depression, anxiety and stress have spiked among HCPs, recently. This has contributed to a wave of turnover that is expected to shake the healthcare industry to its core. As of September 2021, there are 255% more open nursing jobs compared to the previous year. We need our healthcare heroes to keep the world running, but they also deserve far better. This article will share simple but effective strategies for managing work anxiety.

Breathing Exercises: Sometimes, deep breaths are just what you need to stave off the nursing burnout. It only takes a little time from your day, and the returns can be very fruitful. Even a few short, shallow breaths can help calm the nerves a great deal. If you want to take things further, however, deep breath exercises are invaluable in managing anxiety for CNAs. While lying down, breathe deeply through your nose and exhale from your mouth. Make sure you can feel your belly expand with every inhale and contract with each exhale. Repeat this three more times, for the best results. Setting aside a specific time in the day for this breathing exercise helps you bake it into your daily routine.

Be kinder to yourself: When we are stressed, we tend to be extremely hard on ourselves. While this is a natural reaction, wallowing in this mindset is bad for a nurse’s mental health. Instead, you want to show yourself the compassion that you show others. This kind of self-care is an invaluable strategy for warding off stress, as a CNA. Instead of fussing over your mistakes, you want to treat yourself with the love that you deserve. Whether it is reading a book, or watching a big game, allowing yourself to enjoy things goes a long way.

Spend time with others: CNA burnout can spring from feelings of isolation and loneliness. The perfect remedy for this is quality time with people you care about. Set aside some free time to go out with your family and friends. Just being with loved ones does wonders for a nurse’s mental health. If you cannot leave the house, you can voice chat, play virtual games and participate in other remote activities..

Set clear boundaries: Your time at home should be a time of peace. With that in mind, try limiting your exposure to the news on your off hours. While keeping updated with the news is important, overexposure to depressing current events can lead to unwanted stress and an increased risk of nursing burnout. Like with many things, moderation is key in managing work anxiety for a CNA. Set aside a specific time in the day where you can get your updates from trustworthy sources.

Adopt healthy practices – When you physically feel better, you will be able to work better.

Do not be afraid to seek help: This is one of the best strategies for warding off stress as CNA, but in some ways it is the hardest. While things have improved compared to twenty years ago, there is still somewhat of a stigma surrounding mental health. Contrary to what some might say, seeking mental health assistance is not a sign of weakness. Anxiety, stress and depression are just like any other ailment. Do not be afraid to book an appointment with a therapist, mentor or counsellor Additionally, do not hesitate to confide in close friends and family whom you trust. Handling CNA burnout becomes far more manageable with the right assistance.

Our HCPs give so much to our community. Their efforts have saved the lives of millions, amidst an unprecedented global pandemic. A nurse’s mental health deserves as much attention as their physical health. Everyone wins, when the mental health issue is seriously addressed. Less stress and anxiety means less turnover and better results in the workplace. If we do not seriously address the issue soon, we risk losing the lifeblood of the healthcare space. Without enough nurses, you simply cannot run an effective healthcare system.

Being a bread-winner is not easy. You’ve learned how to stand on your own and at the same time be the stronghold of your family. You may have nothing to save but the greatest investment you could achieve is your family’s happiness and comfortability. I grew up with a broken family and most of the women (my grandma, mother, auntie and cousin) are the ones who provide.

It’s one of the reasons why I keep going and I’m proud of what I have become.

Thus far.. there’s still a taboo in our society for what only a woman can do or what only capable of..

Study hard or you will be nothing.. Dress properly or you will get in trouble.. Stay fit or no one will admire you.

Each generation, women are always obliged to have a standard. Yet we always break those barriers. We are the reason why someone is born, we created life and there’s nothing we can’t do… Happy Women’s Month!

Who says I’m just only a woman? being a mom, a partner, and a work-from-home employee. Is a never-ending sacrifice, Who does that? well me, us, every single strong woman. I know who has the greatest aspirations for their family. I cried, I came across never-ending challenges, but I’m still here telling my story. How strong I am. Because I’m not just a girl, but I am a woman.

Let’s forget about how society wants us to be. Forget about the aesthetics, who says you need to be selfie-ready all the time? I, Us, We. are far more precious than that. Thank yourself for being a woman. Just don’t let anyone dictate what you can’t and what you can do. You are one strong Independent woman. Know your worth. Live a little. and don’t forget to laugh harder.

After all, who runs the world again?

I know how hard it is to be a woman, especially a mom and a daughter. I need to provide for my own family and my family. Some people said my life ended when I had my son, but they didn’t know my life had just begun. He didn’t take my future but instead gave me a new one.

And this is the reason why I am here and still fighting for all the challenges that I faced.

This story of my life journey begins at death.

If we can share the “happiest moment” in our lives, mine would be the opposite. Last November 6, 2020, just four days before my birthday, is the saddest moment in my life. I lost the most precious person in my life—my Dad. But that dreadful event did not just stop there when we lost our eldest Brother just last October 9.

I may have to move on from what happened, but I still mourn in silence.

Seeing my Dad and my Brother in a hospital bed would be heartbreaking; witnessing losing their last breath would be wretched.

All the restless nights, uneasy coping, and disturbing conditions I had to undertake as I needed to look after them would never be something I’ll complain nor regret about in my life.

This part of my journey taught me a lot as a person. Helped to become a strong independent woman.

I believe that you’ll never know what you can do as a daughter, sister, or woman until all you have in mind is love.

And that is what makes me driven.

This March, VitaWerks is proud to name Brayan as our HCP of the month! For most people, it usually takes time to acclimate yourself to a new environment. Meanwhile, Brayan only took 3 months to capitalize on every opportunity the VitaWerks platform provides. Nurses are expected to be knowledgeable, practically skilled and more. Even after you have completed your nursing program, none of this is guaranteed. For public safety, nurses must pass the National Council Licensure Examination – Registered Nurse (NCLEX-RN), before they are licensed. All your efforts will be for naught, if you take the test unprepared. In this article, we go over important tips on passing the exam. If you take all this to heart, you could even pass the NCLEX in 75 questions.

What is the best way to study?

You cannot build a study plan for the NCLEX, without good resources. These days, there are a host of learning materials available online. Online NCLEX practice tests, for instance, let you gauge your progress in your studies. No two tests are the same, but these materials let you gauge your current progress as you review. The Kaplan NCLEX-RN Test Prep is one such learning resource. Additionally, the NCSBN provides test exams on its own website. As far as accessible learning material goes, this just scratches the surface.

How Many Hours In A Day Should You Study for the NCLEX-RN?

2 to 3 weeks is not nearly enough time to study for the NCLEX. At the same time, studying every waking hour of the day, all week long is a quick and easy way to burn yourself out. As with all things, you want to strike a balance. Generally, it is advised that you allot 1-2 months for studying. It is highly advised that you create a study plan for the NCLEX-RN, that encompasses this timeframe. That way, you can provide order and clarity to your efforts.

For example, you can designate study days where you can spend two to four hours on your reviews, with breaks in between. Split time between practice questions, chapters on your reviewer and working on sections you struggle with. Do not forget to set rest days as well. We all need to recharge, every now and then.

What should I focus on for NCLEX-RN?

There are four main categories of NCLEX exam questions: Safe and Effective Care Environment, Health Promotion and Maintenance, Psychosocial Integrity, and Physiological Integrity. Any subtopics branch from these four. When you are choosing your reviewer, you need to make sure that all four of them are extensively covered.

How Hard is the NCLEX-RN:

Obviously, you should not coast when you take the nursing licensure exam. At the same time, it is unhelpful to view the test as this insurmountable monolith. If you take the time to prepare yourself, the nursing exam is perfectly reasonable. The 2020 passing rate reached as high as 86.5%. Most people who are qualified to take the exam will pass it. Even if you do not, you can always try again.

What is the NCLEX-RN passing score for 2022?

The nursing entrance test uses an adaptive testing mechanism that estimates your ability, based on your answers to questions of varying difficulty. The test then asks additional questions to affirm its assumptions, until it is 95% certain of your abilities. Afterward, you are assigned a “logit,” which is a unit of measurement that corresponds to your capabilities.

The NCLEX passing score, as of 2022, is a logit of 0. This is the equivalent of correctly answering 50% of all medium-difficulty questions. As long as your logit is positive, that means you have passed.

Do not forget to register for the test

Before you even ask what you should focus on for the NCLEX-RN, you need to register for the exam itself. To do this, you need to apply for the proper nursing credential from your state’s board of licensure and registration. Once you are done, you have to take the NCLEX-RN at least a year after registration. Do remember that there is typically a $200 fee and that licensure requirements can vary from state to state. To avoid confusion, check your state’s requirements with their regulatory board.
